What Affects Invisalign® Appointment Frequency?
Invisalign® is a popular tooth alignment system that uses clear plastic trays to discreetly straighten your teeth. Invisalign is also considered to be more comfortable and convenient than traditional orthodontics.
If you are considering Invisalign to enjoy straighter teeth, you may be wondering how long the treatment will take and Invisalign appointment frequency.
At Montreal Smiles, Dr. Roni Berbari answers these questions. He and his team in Montreal, QC believe in patient education as a crucial part of the treatment process.
How Does Invisalign Work?
The Invisalign system uses a series of clear plastic dental aligners to gradually and comfortably move your teeth into their proper positions. Each dental tray is a computer-generated model based on impressions taken of your teeth. Patients are given a new tray to wear about every two weeks.
How Long Does Treatment Last?
The duration of your Invisalign treatment time will depend on the severity of your tooth or bite misalignment. It also depends on whether you wear the trays as required, which is at least 22 hours a day. Typically, patients need a year to eighteen months to complete their treatment.
What Are the Minimum Appointments Required?
Minimally, Invisalign treatment requires three appointments. The first appointment is your consultation with the dentist. Impressions are taken of your teeth and you will discuss treatment goals. This first visit is usually the longest and lasts about an hour.
At the second appointment, you receive your retainers. You may receive all of them or some of them at this time.
Patients will also need a final appointment, during which the dentist reviews your progress and ensures you have achieved the desired tooth and bite alignment.
Your dentist will also discuss how you can maintain your smile. This may mean wearing your final Invisalign tray regularly, or use of another orthodontic device.
Why Would I Need More Appointments?
Three appointments are the minimum, although most patients will need checkups during treatment to ensure they are progressing on track. During your consultation, your dentist can give you a better idea of the number of in-office visits you may need to enjoy a successful treatment.
Generally speaking, there are two main reasons why you would need additional appointments:
- You have a complex or severe case. The greater the adjustment needed to achieve an aligned smile and bite, the longer the treatment and the more appointments needed.
- You do not wear the trays as long as needed. The Invisalign system is only successful if patients are committed to wearing their retainers for 22 hours a day, minimally. Aligners should only be taken out for eating and hygiene routines. When patients do not wear their aligners for as long as they should, treatment times take longer, and more appointments are needed to assess treatment progress.
